Penelope Cruz Sanchez
Penelope Cruz Sanchez was the daughter
of Eduardo Cruz (a retailer) and Encarna Sanchez (a hairdresser). When she was
a little girl and a devoted performer who would recreate commercials on TV for
the entertainment of her parents. However, she chose to concentrate on dancing.
After pursuing classical ballet for nine years in the Spanish National
Conservatory, she continued her education under a number of highly acclaimed
dancers. She realized what she wanted to do at age 15 after she defeated over
300 other girls in an audition at an agency for talent. The resultant contract
secured her numerous roles on Spanish television shows and music videos, which
opened the door to a career on the big screen. Cruz made her movie debut in The
Greek Labyrinth (1993). (The Greek Labyrinth). Following that, she appeared
briefly in Framed (1992) by Timothy Dalton. The third film she starred in,
Belle Epoque (1992) was an Oscar-winning movie in which she was one of the four
sisters that were seeking to win the love of the handsome deserter soldier. The
film received numerous Goyas, Spanish equivalent of Academy Awards. The list of
credits continued to grow by about three or four films every year, and before
long Cruz was a leading lady of Spanish cinema. Live Flesh (1997) (Live Flesh)
offered her the chance to work with renowned Spanish director Pedro Almodovar
(who would later be her ticket to international fame), and the same year she
was the lead actress in the thriller/drama/mystery/sci-fi film Open Your Eyes
(1997), a huge hit in Spain that earned eight Goyas (though none for Cruz). It
all changed in 1998 when her movie industry comedy La Nina De Tus Ojos (1998)
was awarded the title of Best Actress Goya. After several more attempts to make
a film in English her first international hit was Almodovar's All About My
Mother (1999) where she played an unchaste but well-meaning nun. Cruz found
herself extremely sought-after across both sides of the Atlantic due to her
film winning numerous awards and praises. The American comedy Woman on Top
(2001) was her next big project, is about a chef who has both extraordinary
culinary abilities and severe motion sickness. In the US,
