Mary McDonnell
Mary McDonnell is a two-time
Oscar(r)-nominated actress who is known for her character roles in both modern
and historical screen roles, and the long list of films and stage roles. Mary
Eileen McDonnell is a Pennsylvania-born actress. She was the child of Eileen
(Mundy), an Irish-American computer consultant, and John McDonnell. She was
raised in Ithaca and attended Fredonia State University of New York. She
attended the drama school and was later accepted into Long Wharf Theatre
Company (East Coast). Her breakthrough film role was in Dances with Wolves
(1990) by Kevin Costner. She played the character of "Stands with a
Fist", a Sioux Indian-raised white woman. Her first Academy Award
nomination was for the character. McDonnell's film credits also include Lawrence
Kasdan's Grand Canyon (1991) & Mumford (1999) as well as opposite
veteran actors like Robert Redford, Sidney Poitier and Ben Kingsley; Roland
Emmerich’s Independence Day (1996) (starring Will Smith); the highly acclaimed
art house hit Donnie Darko (192001) as well as Margin Call (2011). It earned
her the Robert Altman Awards at the 2012 Independent Spirit Awards. McDonnell
was a star on the Syfy Network's award-winning show Battlestar Galactica
(2004), in which she was praised for her performance as the President Laura
Roslin. Her recurring guest role as host on the tv series ER (1994) brought her
an Emmy nomination. The popular drama series on TNT Major Crimes (2012) stars
her as Captain Sharon Raydor. It is McDonnell's second show and she was nominated
to win a Primetime Emmy(r). McDonnell was awarded an Best Actress Academy
Award(r) nomination as well as an Golden Globe nomination for her portrayal of
an actress with paraplegia in soap opera in John Sayles's critically acclaimed
film, Passion Fish (1992).
